The idler wheel

When Flipkart finally announced the Mp3 version of Fiona Apples latest album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do,(or the Idler wheel for short) I nearly fainted with happiness. The thing about living in India is that we have absolutely no access to legal sites like iTunes and Spotify as a result of which you’re either a pirate or you wait.

The album is a raw assault on your senses. I naively overlooked the title in my excitement only to be hit by her gut wrenching vibrato and dark humour. Of all her albums this is the most stripped down and honest she has ever gotten. I have to admit that it is a tough album to get through. There isn’t a single catchy hook and her lyrics take your head to places you probably wouldn’t ever want to visit. It leaves you emotionally drained and funnily enough, yearning for more. Attached are two of my favourites: Every single night and Valentine. Enjoy.
